Improving Tao Calligraphy Writing Part II | Tao Hands

Tao Calligraphy writing is fun, and it's also quite challenging to do well. As one begins to learn, one begins to see all the ways improvement is needed. It is most important to receive some training and then to practice according to the training.

For example, it is important to understand how a particular Tao Calligraphy should be written. You will be given the structure of the original Chinese character, which will help you understand the path of the Yi Bi Zi (oneness writing) stroke. You may sometimes be asked to practice this form first. When you move into the Yi Bi Zi - oneness writing of Tao Calligraphy, it is important to practice the Tao Calligraphy first by tracing a well written calligraphy, such as Master Sha's, to memorize and imprint the form upon your soul, heart, mind and body.

Once you have traced it frequently or memorized it well, then practice writing it. Once you write it, pause and evaluate it. Look at the structure. Compare it to Master Sha's. Look at it and evaluate if it is balanced and has the qualities that it should, with the correct flow, slant, depth of stroke, etc. Notice where it is correct and not correct. Notice how it feels to write the calligraphy.

Find what you want to correct first, which is probably in the first segment of your writing, and practice again. Have you improved? Continue this process. If you have a correction that challenges you, or if your Tao Calligraphy always has the same need for correction, this represents a blockage in your shen qi jing (soul,  heart, mind, energy and matter). This is when it could be time for practice to release this blockage.

We can practice to release a blockage without knowing much about what the blockage represents. However, it may also be interesting to explore that question, as to what this blockage may represent in your life, in your health, happiness, mentality or more.

Let us practice now, with an aspect of your writing that you wish to improve. It could be a particular imbalance in a character, it could be how you feel when you write a Tao Calligraphy, it could be a blockage that you experience with all your Tao Calligraphy writing. Choose an aspect now.

Here's how you can practice:

Body Power: Sit straight or stand, with feet flat on the floor and back away from the chair if this is comfortable for you. Place one palm on the navel and one palm on the back side, directly across from the navel, which is the Ming Men Area. If you wish, you may trace the Tao Calligraphy you are learning to write with your "dan" or Ming Men Area as you practice also.

Mind Power: If you are stationary and closing your eyes, visualize brilliant light in your Ming Men area and throughout your being. If you are tracing in any capacity, visualize brilliant light being activated by your tracing and coming into your Ming Men area and being.
